Popular Beat-em-Up Fighting Game

Tekken Tag Tournament is a fighting game in which 2 player-controlled characters must do battle within a variety of arenas and backdrops. It is a sequel to Tekken 3, with there being some new gameplay elements added into the game. Overall, it is the fourth installment in the popular Nancy-produced video game series.

Multi-Platform Release

Tekken Tag Tournament started out as a 1999 arcade game, though the graphics received a considerable upgrade in the year 2000, when the game was added to the launch lineup for the PS2. In addition to the classic fights of previous Tekken games, players can also take part in time trials and survival modes, as well as rewatching any of the character endings in the Theatre Mode. Though graphics are best on PS2, they are still on the whole quite dated and the backgrounds of fights look particularly ugly. Fortunately, this is offset somewhat by the fluid character movement, which focuses you upon the action of the fights. The only other drawback of note is that this game will likely feel stale for anybody who has played previous Tekken games exhaustively.

Final Thoughts

Tekken Tag Tournament does some innovative things with the series, introducing a number of new game modes. The console version is a greater technical achievement than the arcade original, though both reuse a number of assets and animations that could’ve been even better if redesigned from the ground up.

PROS

  • Character movement is fluid
  • Graphics upgrade on console

CONS

  • Reuses many animations from Tekken 3
  • Fight backgrounds are ugly
